Hello.
My AGH is about 2 years old, with a recently weaned (about a month ago) litter of 6. She has always been very gentle, affectionate and docile — until the past few weeks. Now she occasionally barks at me and shakes her head, looking like she’s threatening to bite. She has also put on a lot of weight since I weaned her piglets and doesn’t seem very active. Any ideas what’s going on? Is she uncomfortable due to excessive weight gain? Is she mad at me or suffering from depression since I took her piglets away? She was also experiencing some hair loss, but we gave her some general pig mineral and that seems to have stopped it. My husband wants to eat her and I want to breed her again… but not if she’s become aggressive. There’s a general air of dissatisfaction about her and I sense that something’s wrong (i’ve probably been over compensating by treating her with corn, trying to cheer her up.) Any thoughts welcome. Thank you. ps – Looking at the photos on this site, I realize that she’s a lot fatter than maybe the average agh.

I would start by putting her on a diet. Don’t feed here any more corn. She is unlikely to conceive if she is grossly over weight. I have no idea why the extra weight would make her mean though. Is she alone, or with other pigs?
